I was sooooo lucky and got put in an area that completely suits me to the T!
Heres some of the info from my letter just so you can get a bit of an insight...
Orphanage: Comunidad de Ninos Sagrada Familia
Where?: Ventanilla, A small town in Northern Lima
The Orphange homes up to 600 orphans and abandoned children. The homer is split up into different "family units" with about 40 kids in each. Each group of children lives and eats in a small house with a carer to look after them. All children eat communally at meal times. My main roles in the home will be helping with the day to day runing of the centre, looking after the children, and their general welfare. I will also be involved in organising activites for the children such as arts and crafts and music. I will also be involved in encouraging the children to study, this will involve teaching them english and helping with their homework on an informal basis. There is a newly built baby unit, school and clinic on site which volunteers can be involved with.
Accomodation: I will live in a small self-contained volunteer apartment within the orphanage with a bathroom and communal bedrooms. The orphanage will provide food, but there is a gas cookere in the volunteer accomodation where I will be able to make my own food if i wish.
Life In Peru: The aldea is in the poorest area in northern lima with high rates of poverty and street children, a contrast from the main city of Lima itself where there are all the amenities i could need such as Interent facilities, shops, resteraunts, pharmacies and markets. The beaches are within very easy access, and further a field You'll find the andes or perhaps the amazon jungle with spectacular bird and animal life including the jaguar, caiman and anaconda.
Its becoming more and more real to me that I am actually leaving London, leaving my friend and family in under 3 months! To put it frank i am slightly Sh*tting my self but its good nerves i guess. I had my last official day of college on friday, a very drunken day as many people will back me up on but a day that was spent with people that have became my family! Ive only known the majority of people for 2 years but its amazing how much these people have changed me for the better and how much I have matured. I really am going to miss my woodhouse family so much.. WHOSS HOUSEEE... WOOODHOUSEE!!!! LOL Pretty gay but ahh well, reading my blogs you'll learn to deal with my weird outbursts, Only woodhousians would understand haha...]
